Honours project, completed in 2012
Consumed is a year-long project that investigates consumption patterns of a group of friends and friends-of-friends. The project documents the daily doses of medicine, and complementary medical products that are consumed by this cohort and the range of fast foods that are available to them.
What’s become obvious through this project is the substantial infiltration of medical practice into popular culture, which seeks to establish a pervasive ethos of health and illness in society. However, the work is not concerned with pointing the finger at any of the project’s participants. Nor is it concerned with making broad statements as to whether consuming medicine, supplements or fast food items is particularly “good” or “bad”. What the project aims to do is evidence patterns of consumption and act as a prompt for viewers to re-consider their reliance on medicine and fast foods.
It is my hope that producing this work and displaying it to the public, will remind viewers that medicine and fast food have simultaneously infiltrated our daily lives. During a time when there is a pill for every ill, have the consumers become consumed by the ever-expanding health industry?
